What Is PFD Fabric?

PFD fabric — short for Prepared for Dyeing — is woven fabric that has been scoured to remove natural impurities, sizing agents, and waxes, then bleached to a uniform white. The result is a clean, highly absorbent fabric that accepts dye evenly without blotchiness or uneven uptake.

PFD fabric starts its life as grey fabric (loom state fabric). It is then processed through scouring baths to remove all contaminants, followed by bleaching with hydrogen peroxide or other agents to achieve a consistent white base.

The three main variants are PFD (for piece dyeing), PFGD (Prepared for Garment Dyeing — with controlled pre-shrinkage), and PFP (Prepared for Printing — optimised for rotary, flatbed, or digital printing).

Abtex International (Pvt.) Ltd. supplies export-grade PFD fabric from Pakistan in a wide range of constructions to dye houses, garment manufacturers, and fabric traders globally.

PFD Fabric — Key Facts

PFD fabric is scoured grey fabric — cleaned and bleached for consistent dye uptake. It is the standard base fabric for piece dyeing and printing operations.

  • Scoured: all natural waxes and impurities removed
  • Bleached: uniform white base for even dyeing
  • High absorbency for reactive and vat dyeing
  • Available as PFD, PFGD, and PFP variants
  • 100% cotton, PC, and CVC compositions
  • Packaged in roll or bale form for export

How PFD Fabric Is Made

PFD fabric goes through a controlled wet processing sequence to transform raw grey fabric into a dyeing-ready substrate.

1
Grey Fabric
Raw loom state fabric — woven, unscoured, and unbleached. Contains natural cotton waxes, sizing agents, and impurities.
2
Singeing
Fabric passes over a flame to burn off surface fibres and lint, creating a clean, smooth surface for processing.
3
Desizing
Sizing agents applied to warp yarns during weaving are enzymatically or chemically removed to open the fabric structure.
4
Scouring
Hot alkaline treatment removes natural waxes, oils, and non-cellulosic impurities — making the fabric highly absorbent.
5
Bleaching
Hydrogen peroxide bleaching removes natural colour and any remaining impurities, giving a uniform white base for dyeing.
6
PFD / PFGD / PFP
Final treatment varies: PFD is ready for dyeing; PFGD adds controlled shrinkage; PFP adds print-optimised finish.

Types of PFD Fabric We Supply

Abtex International (Pvt.) Ltd. supplies three main variants of PFD fabric, each optimised for a specific downstream process.

PFD
PFD — Prepared for Dyeing
Scoured and bleached fabric ready for piece dyeing. The standard PFD specification ensures uniform dye uptake for reactive, vat, and pigment dyeing across the full colour range. Available in all constructions from sheetings to canvas.
→ For: Reactive, Vat & Pigment Dyeing
PFGD
PFGD — Prepared for Garment Dyeing
PFD fabric with controlled pre-shrinkage applied. Garments cut and sewn from PFGD fabric can be garment-dyed without further dimensional change — essential for fashion brands and garment dyers requiring consistent sizing post-dyeing.
→ For: Garment Dyeing & Fashion Brands
PFP
PFP — Prepared for Printing
PFD fabric treated with a print-optimised finish for sharp, bright, and even printing results. Available with and without controlled shrinkage for rotary printing, flatbed printing, and digital (inkjet) printing applications.
→ For: Rotary, Flatbed & Digital Printing
Bleached White
Bleached White Fabric
Fully bleached optical white fabric — used directly as white fabric for garments, bedding, and home textiles. Available in various GSM and constructions. Optical brightening agents (OBA) can be applied on request.
→ For: White Garments & Home Textiles

What Is PFD Fabric Used For?

PFD fabric is used wherever consistent, even dyeing or printing is required — from garment manufacturing to home textiles and industrial applications.

Reactive Dyeing
PFD fabric is the standard substrate for reactive dyeing — producing bright, wash-fast colours with excellent colour fastness on cotton and blended fabrics.
Vat & Pigment Dyeing
Vat dyes give outstanding wash and light fastness. Pigment dyeing on PFD fabric produces soft-hand effects for casual and fashion garments.
Rotary & Digital Printing
PFP fabric provides a clean, bright base for rotary, flatbed, and reactive digital printing for printed fabric production.
Garment Dyeing
PFGD fabric with controlled shrinkage allows garments to be cut, sewn, and then garment-dyed — popular for fashion casualwear and premium basics.
Home Textiles
Bleached and PFD fabric used as the base for home textile made-ups — bedding, curtains, cushion covers, and table linen requiring precise colour matching.
Workwear & Uniforms
PFD fabric in twill and drill constructions is dyed to precise Pantone colours for corporate uniforms, workwear, and institutional clothing requiring colour consistency.

PFD Fabric — FAQ

Common questions about PFD fabric from dye houses, garment manufacturers, and fabric buyers.

What is PFD fabric?
PFD fabric (Prepared for Dyeing) is woven fabric that has been scoured and bleached to remove all natural impurities, waxes, and sizing agents — leaving it clean, absorbent, and ready for reactive, vat, or pigment dyeing without any additional preparation.
What is the difference between PFD fabric and grey fabric?
Grey fabric is completely unprocessed loom-state fabric. PFD fabric has been scoured and bleached, removing all natural impurities and cotton wax so it accepts dye uniformly. PFD fabric costs more than grey fabric due to the extra wet processing steps.
What is the difference between PFD, PFGD, and PFP fabric?
PFD (Prepared for Dyeing) is standard scoured and bleached fabric for piece dyeing. PFGD (Prepared for Garment Dyeing) has controlled pre-shrinkage applied so garments can be dyed after cutting and sewing. PFP (Prepared for Printing) has a print-optimised finish for rotary, flatbed, or digital printing — available with or without shrinkage control.
Can PFD fabric be used for garment dyeing?
Yes — but specifically PFGD (Prepared for Garment Dyeing) should be used. PFGD has controlled pre-shrinkage applied, ensuring that garments cut and sewn from it do not distort during the garment dyeing process. Standard PFD without shrinkage control may cause size changes when garment-dyed.
What dyeing methods work with PFD fabric?
PFD fabric works with reactive dyeing (bright, wash-fast colours on cotton), vat dyeing (excellent wash and light fastness), pigment dyeing (soft hand effects), and direct dyeing. The scoured and bleached base ensures even dye penetration and consistent shade throughout the fabric.
What constructions are available in PFD fabric from Pakistan?
Abtex International (Pvt.) Ltd. supplies PFD fabric in sheetings, poplins, twills, drills, Oxford, canvas, flannel, and other constructions in 100% cotton, PC blend, and CVC — in GSM from 80 to 450+ and widths of 44/45 inch and 58/60 inch.
What export terms does Abtex offer for PFD fabric?
We supply PFD fabric on FOB (Free on Board), CNF (Cost and Freight), and CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) terms to buyers worldwide. Contact us via WhatsApp or email for pricing and lead times.
