What Is Melange Yarn?

Melange yarn is created by blending differently-coloured fibres — typically dyed and raw (undyed) fibres — before the spinning process. The result is a yarn with a characteristic heathered, mottled appearance that cannot be replicated by post-spin dyeing.

The depth of the melange effect is controlled by the percentage of dyed fibre in the blend. A higher dyed% produces a darker charcoal tone; a lower dyed% yields a lighter silver-grey. This makes melange yarn extremely versatile for achieving tonal and gradient fabric effects.

Unlike conventional dyed yarn, melange yarn has excellent colourfastness because the colour is in the fibre itself — not applied to the yarn surface. It is widely used in T-shirts, knitwear, sportswear, hosiery, and home textiles where a rich, textured heather look is desired.

At Abtex International, our melange yarn is available in ring-spun and open-end spinning, across Ne 6s to Ne 40s, in both single and plied constructions. View our quality control →

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our melange yarn range.

What is melange yarn and how is it different from dyed yarn?
Melange yarn is produced by blending dyed and undyed fibres together before spinning. This creates a heathered appearance inherent in the fibre structure. Conventional dyed yarn is spun first then dyed as a complete yarn. Melange has superior colourfastness because the colour is in the fibre — and achieves tonal effects impossible to replicate with post-spin dyeing.
What is the difference between grey melange and heather melange?
Grey melange yarn uses only black/dark grey dyed fibres blended with raw white cotton to achieve a grey tone. Heather melange may include multiple colours of dyed fibre blended with raw fibres for a more complex, multi-dimensional tonal effect — including warm, cool, and colour-on-colour blends, not just grey.
What compositions of melange yarn do you offer?
We offer 11 compositions: 100% Cotton Melange, PC Melange, PV Melange, 100% Polyester Melange, Siro / Marl Melange, Core Spun Melange, Siro Slub Melange, Heather Grey Melange, Organic/GRS Melange, Triblend Melange, and Neppy Melange. Custom blends available on request.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
Our standard MOQ is 150 kg per colour/count combination. Sample quantities of 1–5 kg are available for testing and development — contact us to request a sample.
Can you develop a custom grey shade or custom melange blend?
Yes. Specify your desired grey% (e.g. 10%, 20%, 50%) or provide a reference sample and we develop the blend to match. Development samples are dispatched within 5–7 working days. Contact our technical team →
Do you supply GRS-certified or organic melange yarn?
Yes. We supply GRS-certified recycled cotton melange and organic cotton melange with full chain-of-custody documentation. Certifications supported include Oeko-Tex Standard 100, Inditex, and US Cotton Trust Protocol. See our quality & certifications page →
