What is Open-End Yarn?

Rotor Spinning — How OE Yarn is Produced

Open-end (OE) yarn is produced by rotor spinning — a method that does not use a spindle or continuous twist from fibre mass to package. Instead, fibres are fed into a high-speed rotating rotor where they are collected on the rotor groove and twisted as they are pulled off continuously.

This process is significantly faster than ring spinning and handles shorter fibres efficiently, making it more economical at coarser counts. The resulting yarn has a bulkier, softer handle with good uniformity — well suited to heavy fabric constructions.

OE yarn is characterised by its higher twist compared to ring-spun yarn at the same count, which gives it a harder, more compact structure. The yarn surface has a slightly fuzzy appearance — fibres wrap around the core in a less parallel arrangement than ring-spun, which is why OE yarn is coarser in texture but more absorbent and bulkier by volume.

These properties make open-end yarn the preferred choice for workwear, denim, canvas, towels, and heavy knits where bulk, absorbency, and cost-efficiency are priorities over surface smoothness.

OE Yarn vs Ring Spun Yarn — Key Differences

Property Open-End (OE) Yarn Ring Spun Yarn
Spinning Method Rotor spinning Ring & traveller spinning
Fibre Length Used Shorter fibres acceptable Longer fibres preferred
Production Speed Much faster — more economical Slower — higher cost
Yarn Strength Lower tensile strength Higher tensile strength
Yarn Texture Bulkier, slightly fuzzy Smoother, more even surface
Absorbency Higher — open fibre structure Lower
Best Count Range Ne 6s – Ne 20s (coarse to medium) Ne 20s – Ne 80s (medium to fine)
Typical End Uses Workwear, denim, canvas, towels, heavy knits T-shirts, shirting, fine apparel
Cost More economical per kg Higher cost

Key Properties of Open-End Yarn

🔄
High Uniformity
Rotor spinning gives consistent count and twist within-lot — reduced count variation.
💧
High Absorbency
Open fibre structure makes OE yarn more absorbent than ring-spun — ideal for towels and cleaning textiles.
📦
Bulkier Handle
Higher bulk per unit weight — fabrics made from OE yarn have a fuller, heavier feel.
💰
Cost-Efficient
Faster production and lower raw material requirements make OE yarn more economical at equivalent counts.
🔧
Harder Structure
Higher twist gives a harder yarn structure — better suited to heavy, durable fabric constructions.
🧵
Coarser Counts
OE spinning excels at coarser counts (Ne 6s–20s) where ring-spun offers no performance advantage.

Frequently Asked Questions — Open-End Yarn

Open-end yarn (also called OE yarn) is produced by rotor spinning — a method where fibres are fed into a high-speed rotating rotor, collected on its groove, and pulled off as a continuous twisted yarn. Unlike ring spinning, there is no spindle. This makes OE yarn production faster and more economical, especially at coarser counts. The resulting yarn is bulkier, slightly fuzzy in texture, and more absorbent than ring-spun yarn.
The key differences: (1) Process — OE uses rotor spinning; ring-spun uses a ring and traveller system. (2) Strength — ring-spun is stronger at the same count. (3) Texture — OE is bulkier and slightly fuzzier; ring-spun is smoother. (4) Count range — OE excels at coarser counts (Ne 6s–20s); ring-spun dominates finer counts (Ne 20s+). (5) Cost — OE is more economical to produce. (6) Absorbency — OE is more absorbent due to its open fibre structure.
For 100% cotton OE yarn, we produce in the range of Ne 6s to Ne 20s. For CVC open-end yarn (cotton/polyester blends), the available count range is Ne 8s to Ne 16s across all four blend ratios. Please enquire with your specific count requirement and we will confirm availability and pricing.
We manufacture OE yarn in-house at our facility in Hyderabad, Pakistan. We are not a trading house or agent. Buying direct from us means you have access to our production team for technical queries, consistent quality control across orders, and no intermediary commission added to your price.
CVC stands for Chief Value Cotton — a polyester-cotton blended yarn where the cotton content exceeds 50%. When OE (rotor) spinning is used to produce CVC yarn, the result is a CVC open-end yarn. We manufacture CVC OE yarn in four blend ratios: 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, and 52/48 (Cotton/Polyester). See our dedicated CVC OE Yarn page for full specifications.
Yes. OE yarn is widely used in terry towels, bath towels, face towels, and kitchen textiles. The open fibre structure of OE yarn gives it higher absorbency than ring-spun yarn at the same count — an important property for towel performance. OE yarn is also used in cleaning cloths, mop heads, and industrial wiper products.
Minimum order quantity depends on yarn type and count. Please share your full specification (type, count, quantity) via the enquiry form or WhatsApp and we will confirm MOQ, pricing, and lead time within 48 hours.
All our yarn is dispatched FOB Karachi. We provide full commercial and shipping documentation. Both sea freight (FCL/LCL) and air freight options are available depending on your order volume and urgency.
